Workers comp class code

Class codes group jobs by injury risk and set the base rate per $100 of payroll for workers comp premium; most states use the NCCI system.

Class rates can differ sharply between clerical work and higher-hazard work such as roofing or logging. Premium calculations use payroll by class, the applicable class rate, and experience-rating adjustments, so a classification error can materially change the quote and audit.

California and a handful of independent states use their own classification systems, and the monopolistic states (North Dakota, Ohio, Washington, Wyoming) sell comp only through a state fund, which changes how a PEO structures coverage there. In any PEO quote, insist on seeing the rate applied to each class code, not a blended per-employee number.
